The Contemplation Place

The Contemplation Place is a limited edition, single colour, photopolymer etching (photogravure) print. The image is of the area around Hen Eglwys Llangelynnin, one of the remotest and oldest churches in Wales dating from the 12th Century. A beautifully peaceful spot to sit and ponder, high up on the side of the Tal y Fan mountain near Conwy in North Wales. Taken from an original photograph, this photopolymer etching is produced as a limited edition of 16, hand printed on Somerset Satin printmaking paper.

Inside Hen Eglwys

Inside Hen Eglwys is a limited edition photopolymer etching print depicting the inside of the old church Hen Eglwys Llangelynnin, near the village of Henryd in Conwy, North Wales. The ancient church is very simple and humble in it's appearance, and perched high on the wall inside is the carrying rack used to transport coffins up to the church via the 'coffin road' track which leads from Park Mawr woods below. Taken from an original photograph, this photopolymer etching is produced as a limited edition of 10, hand printed on Somerset Satin printmaking paper.

In this painting four overlapping faces, each with distinct features, skin tones, and expressions. The blending and layering suggests interconnectedness - that despite different, people are bound together. The use of bold, contrasting colours creates intensity and warmth, possibly symbolising energy, vitality and even struggle. It's like a celebration of human diversity and resilience, while also emphasising unity and collective identity.

Against a storm-worn wall of muted tones, three blossom rise - outlined in gold, shimmering with silver, their hearts glowing in orange warmth. They do not shout, they do not wither. They endure, luminous in their quiet way. Even in grey please, they bloom, a soft reminder that beauty survives. Same as humans survive no matter what.

Knutsford Royal May Day 2025: The Knutsford Royal May Day began in 1864 when the event was revived by St. John's Church, following ancient traditions with a procession, crowning of a May Queen, and Maypole dancing. The festival was given its "Royal" title in 1887 by the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) The huge travelling Fun Fair on the Heath is the largest in the North West of England and is presented by John Collins who's family have been involved from the beginning. In the drawing you can see the families Waltzer at the entrance to the ground.

Rocky Coastal View

"Rocky Coastal View" is based on a reference photo provided by the Society of All Artists (SAA) in their magazine "Paint & Create" in a tutorial by watercolour artist Tom Shepherd. I chose to accept the SAA's challenge of using it because of the technical challenges it presented for someone using oil pastels - to create the adjacent light and dark forms, the smoothness of the gradating colours in the sky and to a lesser extent the foreground, and the opportunity to add contrast by using this medium to create rougher textures on the rocks and in the sea. And it was a lovely image. I chose to focus in my rendition on the sense of peace the reference photo gave me, while adding a joyful “zing” to the sunset colours. I did a Google reverse image search on the reference photo after I completed my oil pastel piece and found it on Unsplash, that it was loaded by Andrej Lišakov and that it's Ursa Beach in Portugal.

Fleetwith Pike Reflected In Buttermere

"Fleetwith Pike Reflected in Buttermere" is based on a photo I took looking across the lake in early December 2021 during a lovely walk on a fine winter day and was painted in June 2025. I created this image using Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils, which I think give a lovely soft feel to a painting without compromising on the vibrancy of colours. The only thing was I felt I had to be careful of was maintaining the right contrasts between the light and dark areas - enough to give a strong image but not so much as to give too stark a one. We don't often go walking around Buttermere as it can get so crowded that even driving up some of the surrounding roads can be hard, let alone finding a parking place. But midweek, outside school holidays, in the winter, it can be a wonderfully peaceful place - and so beautiful!
