Chroma: the Greek word for ‘colour,’ and an important part of how the human eye perceives our surroundings. Different colours often have meanings - red hues can signify danger or passion, whilst green / blue hues represent calmness. For this artwork, the colours of familiar landscapes have been altered digitally from their original state. This creates an unnatural looking landscape; showing the importance of colour in the perception of our surroundings.

Hand embroidery on stainless steel sieve

This work celebrates hand embroidery, a traditional textile technique, but with a playful twist of stitching onto a kitchen sieve. The delicate stitches and soft threads contrast with the rigid steel, transforming a functional household tool into a unique piece of art. The choice of sieve is more than just a quirky base. Its woven steel mesh uses a traditional textiles technique which is also widely used in industrial applications such as sieves. By bringing the combinations of materials and techniques together, the piece asks viewers to think differently about embroidery, weaving and how materials are used. The design draws inspiration from traditional tartan fabrics. The quirky nature of the sieve catches the viewer’s attention, while the detail invites a slower look revealing the intricate and slow process of hand embroidery.

I have always admired this fabulous example of Islamic architecture - the fortress and the palace nestled in the verdant trees makes a good subject. I enjoyed using the colour changes in the sky to compliment the colour scheme - the purples of the mountains, the sunset cream sky and the fertile green foreground. This piece was made using palette knives as well as brushes using water based Winsor & Newton oils on canvas board.

The majesty of Mount Fuji in the background is ever powerful and my aim with this piece was to capture the beauty both of the stunning mountain as well as the delicate flowers framing it. I used New York based Golden acrylics and impasto to achieve the texture in the foreground. A mix of palette knives and brushes were my tools.

This piece was inspired by my many visits to Liverpool Museums’ Entomology rooms, where I was fascinated by the unappreciated beauty of insects. This Cicada specifically drew my attention, due to the layers of sheer colour and texture on the wings, as well as the earthy tones present throughout the insect. To emphasise these layers of colour and texture, I used many thin layers of acrylic and retarder.

This piece was painted from reference photos I took in Liverpool Museums' Entomology room. I was drawn to the beetle’s intense colours and the almost alien texture of its exoskeleton, which I found an unusual beauty in. The way the light bounced off it interested me, and I wanted to capture that vivid colour and texture with paint.

This beetle was another find from the Entomology room at Liverpool Museum. I was specifically interested in the richness of its shell, the glossy, metallic texture, and the way the light hit it. I wanted to capture all of that intensity in paint and flecks of crayon, and let the colours take over.
