It responds to the atmosphere on the island of Skye and how when the mist descends the landscape becomes enveloped in a veil which is dreamlike. My paintings are about the push and pull of the landscape and how they are at one at times and others really challenging each another. My work responds to these elements by using memory and moments of observation that stay with me bringing a sense of fleeting beauty that I try to evoke.

I am multi-disciplinary artist, architect and teacher based in east London. My art practice explores notions of ‘home and memory’, connected through the obsessive activity of drawing as visual diary, largely inspired by dreams/nightmares. These often evolve into larger Mixed media works. I studied Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art, MA Art in Architecture at East London University and MA Art in Special Projects at London Metropolitan University. I have taught drawing and sketchbook art and drypoint printmaking at Hausprint Studios and Morley College. The drypoint print submitted titled: ‘Girlfriend in a wheelchair’ is part of the epic narrative series that I have been pursuing over the last 3 years - through an Epic charcoal drawing (about love and loss, family, death, life, leaving, home and work) and now extended through the drypoint print technique. The intention is to create a fold out sequence of connected narratives in keeping with same themes as the Epic Drawing.

Beautiful David Austin roses - ‘Champagne’, I think - with very close and subtle chroma and value shifts and careful attention to edge variation and control. The roses and glass vase are rendered with minimal strokes, very expressively, but such is the attention to value, chroma and edges that the expressive brushwork tricks the eye into seeing detail where really there is none and the viewer therefore collaborates in the process. This was painted this year, in my third year of painting and was an absolute joy to paint….

Vixen was developed from a reference photo of a Red Fox by Ronald Doucette. I chose the intaglio technique of drypoint etching, as I wanted a delicate, illustrative effect for this piece. It is printed on Kent Printmaker Paper with Cranfield Caligo Safe Wash Etching Ink (Carbon Black). I did a limited edition of just 6 and this is number 4.

Silent Watcher is a pastel painting inspired by a photograph by American photographer Mark Lurther. This little Eastern Bluebird immediately caught my eye—so small, yet with such striking presence. Its vivid blue and orange plumage isn’t something we often see here, which made it all the more captivating to paint. There was a quiet charm about the way it sat, watchful and still, as though guarding its space. This piece was also a personal challenge, being my very first bird in pastels. Capturing the delicate balance of softness and vibrancy pushed me to grow, and I loved bringing this beautiful bird to life on paper.

When I first saw his image of a young raccoon peeking around a tree—whether out of curiosity or caution—I knew I had to paint it. The soft colours, the way the light played on its fur, and that tentative pose captured me immediately. Raccoons are often misunderstood, yet they have just as much right to be here as any of us. In this moment, the little creature seems both vulnerable and full of wonder—perhaps hiding from danger, or maybe just watching the world go by. I wanted to bring that feeling to life in pastel, celebrating not just the raccoon itself, but the quiet beauty of an animal often overlooked.

This was painted for my mother’s birthday - September 1st:- the flowers are from the garden and were actually picked for Mothers’ Day. The roses are Mme Gregoire de Staechlin and sadly they only bloom once a year. They are climbers and the flower heads naturally droop downwards so that a perfect view of their beautiful form is given - and their scent is equal to their beauty. The form of these roses is very complex and this composition is both back-lit and from the side…there is no attempt to paint individual petals but the change in chroma and the contrast in values as the light comes through the edges of the petals gives the illusion of form, light and shadow doing the heavy lifting The willow- pattern jug is suggested, in only slightly more detail than its’ shadow…

The title is taken from perhaps the greatest poem of the 20th century… T S Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’ and was inspired by our confused and fractured world. The view is from a mountain summit, but where you would expect clarity and a clear vision of the way ahead there is instead a fragmented vista….The world depicted is nevertheless beautiful and the rich, saturated colours show this - but there is intractable and dangerously fissured ground to negotiate too. The painting moves in the direction of abstraction, though is still recognisable as a landscape. There is not much of an attempt to depict value and chroma in a realistic way in this painting, rather a reliance on texture ( with palette knives used rather than brushes) and colour to convey atmosphere and an unsettling element to the whole. These amazing animals are known for their powerful bite, which allows them to hunt different types of prey like deer, fish, and even caimans. Sadly, jaguars are considered near threatened, meaning they are at risk of becoming endangered. Their main threats include habitat loss due to deforestation and hunting. Protecting their natural homes is very important to help keep their populations alive. Many organizations are working to save these magnificent creatures and their habitats. By learning more about jaguars, we can help raise awareness and support efforts to conserve them for future generations.

Polar bears, the iconic inhabitants of the Arctic, are facing a precarious future as their sea ice habitat continues to thin and diminish at an alarming rate. This loss of ice, primarily driven by climate change, severely impacts the bears' ability to hunt seals, their primary food source. As ice coverage decreases, polar bears are forced to travel greater distances in search of food, leading to fatigue, malnutrition, and lower reproductive success. Additionally, the thinning ice forces them to spend more time on land, where food is scarce, further exacerbating their vulnerability. The dwindling habitat not only threatens the survival of polar bears but also jeopardizes the delicate balance of the Arctic ecosystem. Conservation efforts are increasingly crucial to mitigate climate change impacts and protect this species, ensuring that polar bears can continue to thrive in their natural environment.

Bath Abbey in the Afternoon

I visited the same cafe over three days to complete this work. Early in the morning, the staff start setting up chairs and tables in the Abbey churchyard. A brief moment of quietness is soon followed by a bustling crowd of tourists keen to visit the iconic Abbey and the Roman Baths. From afar, the grandeur of the Abbey makes one pause in admiration. Up close, its intricate details incite awe and astonishment. This drawing captures the moment at which the churchyard quiets down in the afternoon, as cafe workers start to close up for the day.

I was on a coach when I first saw Northampton through a window. I later visited the city three times over a 10-day period to complete this artwork. The unnamed square near All Saints' Church, Northampton, contains vibrant snippets of everyday life. Businessmen sit down for a sip of coffee, delivery drivers wait around for new orders, workers call their families, children watch the pigeons, and locals stop by to take a break from their busy lives. This small yet buzzing square is full of life.

Y Nyth – The Nest

“Y Nyth – The Nest” is based on a reference photo provided by Liz Chaderton. It was published in the Society of All Artists (SAA) Paint & Create magazine, as part of a watercolour tutorial and as a resource for an “Artist’s photo, you paint it” challenge. The SAA challenge allowed members to use whichever medium they preferred, so I decided to use oil pastels, including Sennelier’s wonderful iridescent colours. I had great fun shading my eggs, blending matt and iridescent white, iridescent pale blue and silver, using Zest It Pencil Blend to thin the oil pastels, to give a sense of the curves and how the light fell on them. I named my work “Y Nyth – The Nest” because of a remembered conversation with my mother about what a lovely, homely house name it is, with there being more than one property in the village of Trearddur Bay with the name Y Nyth, which is Welsh for The Nest.

Hand embroidery on fabric

‘Circles’ is a bold expression of colour and movement using contemporary hand embroidery. A field of circles, some subtly raised, along with soft curved lines that interlink the shapes, create a textured flowing surface. Needle and thread has been used to ‘paint’ the fabric surface with colour, light, shadow and rhythm inviting the eye to explore beyond the curves to see the intricate detail of the stitches. The framing of the embroidery in the wooden ring gives a nod to the traditional use of embroidery hoops when stitching, as well as mirroring a clock face which reflects the time consuming nature of hand embroidery.
